We are extremely fortunate where we are to have no end of great things to do in Suffolk and Norfolk and what’s even better is much of it is free (or very cheap!)
Bungay Town- 3.2 miles
The closest town to our campsite is Bungay; an attractive and thriving market town, situated in a loop of the beautiful river Waveney. Bungay boasts many historic attractions including the ruins of Bigod’s castle, the old borough well and the ancient Buttercross, which hosts a a market every Thursday. Bungay also has a variety of pubs, restaurants and take-aways if you don’t feel like cooking!
Beccles Town- 7.1 miles
Beccles is a charming market town and is a gateway to the Norfolk Broads. You are spoilt for choice for restaurants and cafes and the Friday market is well worth a visit. Just minutes walk from Beccles town centre is lush green marsh land, providing some stunning walks amongst the abundant wildlife. Boat hire is available down by the river, which makes for an excellent day out. For those interested in a slightly faster paced activity, check out Ellough Park Raceway, an excellent outdoor go-kart track located just outside Beccles.
Southwold- 15.5 miles
Southwold is a charming Suffolk seaside town, located on the Suffolk Heritage coast. Picturesque and quaint one could easily while away a few hours wandering around Southwold, or in the summer months enjoying the beach!
Dunwich Forest- 15.1 miles (our top pick for a free and family fun activity!)
Dunwich Forest is a beautiful mixture of coniferous and broadleaved woodland and is accessible from Dunwich Village. Part of the Suffolk coasts and heaths area of outstanding natural beauty, Dunwich forest is well worth spending a few hours walking round the seemingly endless miles of maintained and signposted public footpaths and trails. With many of the walks linking through Dunwich village it is easy to break up a walk with a lovely pub lunch at the popular Ship Inn pub. For those who enjoy their trail bike riding, pick yourself up a map of the area and go for an explore!
Flixton Air Museum- 4.2 miles
Another great and inexpensive activity located a short distance from the campsite. The Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation museum is a great place for both children and adults to get up close to some great pieces of aviation history. It is free to visit the museum but donations are appreciated to assist with the upkeep of this excellent attraction.
The Rumburgh Buck- 3.8 miles
A lovely cosy and quintessentially English pub. Child and dog friendly, the pub serves up great food and a good selection of local beers and ales. The pub is a perfect distance from the campsite for a bike ride to enjoy dinner and a pint or two.
St Peter’s Brewery- 0.7 miles
One for the adults and the beer lovers! Located less than a mile from the campsite is St Peter’s Brewery. Established in 1996, the brewery is located amongst a range of traditional former agricultural buildings, adjacent to St Peter’s hall. The brewery runs tours from Easter at the weekends, on the hour from 11am until 3.30pm at a cost of £7.50 per adult (includes a free bottle of beer per person to take home!). It’s well worth a visit!
Geldeston Locks- 8 miles
The Geldeston Locks Inn is a wonderful riverside pub and music venue. Located on the river Waveney between Beccles and Bungay, the locks makes the perfect lunch stop on a day’s river cruising. At present you can hire canoes from Bungay but not boats, so if you wish to spend a day on the river in a motor powered boat, the best place to hire from is Beccles.
Bungay Pool and Gym- 3.3 miles
Great if the weather is not on your side! A lovely indoor swimming pool which is very child friendly. The pool boasts a water slide and during fun swim times an inflatable assault course, great fun for the children! If you want to continue your fitness routine there is also a well equipped gym.
Henstead Arts and Crafts Centre- 11.7 miles
The centre consists of 10 individual workshops and retail units. A great place for a coffee at ‘The Shed’ followed by a leisurely stroll around checking out all items on sale in the units. The centre hosts craft hours for children on Saturdays and also Wednesdays and Fridays during school holidays. These craft hours are very popular so booking is recommended. Check out the website for more information and for contact details.
